This week in 1b...

We are very excited about our John Chapman Unit in Social Studies that we are beginning this week.  Thank you to all of the parents that sent in supplies for our fun activities to learn about a famous Missourian.

In Math, students are doing a great job adding and comparing numbers.  We are also working on word problems which can be challenging so give them extra praise for their math activities that they bring home this week.

In Reading we are working on building our stamina as readers, word work, listening to reading and writing about what we read.

I am so proud of how hard students are working in their writing journals.  They have been thinking of small moment stories, revising and even storytelling to get suggestions from peers on how to improve their work.  In Handwriting we are working on the letters C, O, S, and V.

Important Reminders:

-We have library Thursday, be sure to send in those library books.
-Picture Day is Thursday at 9:00.  Hopefully your child's hair will be the exact same style you sent them to school with thanks to our early time.  :)
-September reading logs (the coloring apple sheet) should be completed and turned in September 30th.  I hope the strategies to get your child excited to read at night have been helping.
-Scholastic Book Orders are due September 30th.
-October 4th is Field Day.

This week in 1b...

In Reading, we are going to begin reading groups which means I will be instructing your child on their individual reading levels.  Students are doing an excellent job on reading centers and their independent work.  Please be sure to read with your child each night and color in an apple afterwards on the September Reading Log.  Please send the log back signed once completed.

In Writing we are working on our short stories.  Some strategies we are using are underlining words we don't know how to spell, start with a capital letter, end with punctuation and using your finger to make spaces in between each word.  I also sent home a packet on our handwriting curriculum if you are interested in practicing at home.  We are completing our numbers 1-10 this week.

This week we have been working hard on solving addition word problems in math class.  We have been circling numbers in the sentence and underlining the important parts.  ie.  How many in all?

Important Reminders:

-Thursday we have library, please send all books to school by Thursday so that your child can check out new books for the up-comming week.
-September 13th is early dismissal at 1:50.  Please be sure your child knows how they are going home.
-September 20th- Picture Day
-This year, Target will give money to schools all over the country for one simple act: a vote. Our school needs just 25 votes to earn a $25 donation from Target. But that's only the beginning. For each additional vote, our school will get $1 more. So please remember that, although the gesture is small, the rewards are potentially huge. Go toGiveWith.Target.com to vote once a week through Sept. 21st or until Target has given away all $5 million. And please forward this email to your friends. Vote and see rules at GiveWith.Target.com.
