Non fiction text feature scavenger hunt!

This week in 4B....

Happy Panther Day Week!
Please help remind your child to wear their team color white or blue this Friday for Panther Day.  Those of you that are new to Reed Elementary, this is our field day so prepare your child for outdoor fun and tennis shoes.

In Math we are continuing to work on multiples, factors, prime and composite numbers.  Math fact practice is very important during this unit! I encourage fact practice at home whether it be flash card practice or through online games.

Our Personal Narrative Unit in Writing is coming to a close.  I am so proud of the progress the students in 4B have made!  Our final Personal Narrative On-Demand (timed writing assessment) will be on Monday.

We are moving on from our focus on characters and beginning a focus on non-fiction text in Reading.  Students are writing reading letters to me weekly about what they are reading independently.  They are also working in reading group partnerships as well as spelling, cursive and grammar lessons each week.

In Science we are studying Rocks & Minerals.   We have learned a karaoke song to help us remember the rock cycle: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/rocks-minerals-landforms/rock-cycle.htm   We will do a hands on mineral testing lab tomorrow to help us understand how to identify minerals.

Updates & Reminders:
-This is our last week of robotics!  Students have enjoyed their time programming and will now benefit from additional enrichment time now that our class has finished this unit.
-Early Release next Friday

This Week in 4B...

Hi Parents!

Thank you for signing up for conferences, I can't wait to share your child's progress so far! Just in case you have not, here is the link:

Here's what we are up to this week...
Math: We have begun our new unit and are focusing on factors & multiples.  Next up: prime and composite numbers.  Please make sure your child is practicing their math facts nightly.  They should currently be on their 5X facts.  Students have 3 seconds per problem to demonstrate their fact fluency.  I am so proud of all of their hard work so far!  Way to go team 4B!

Writing: We are continuing to work on Personal Narratives.  Try brainstorming some small moments at home that your child might enjoy writing about.  Also, encourage them to share their writing with you.  :)

Reading: Book partnerships are in full swing.  Your child is meeting with a partner two times each week to meet, discuss and assign new chapters to read.  During this time, they are expected to fill our a reading journal for each assignment which is due each time they meet with their partner.

S.S. / Science: Mapping was a success!  We had some excellent scores on our Mapping Unit tests,  now we are moving on to our Rocks & Minerals Unit.

Fun Things:
-There is a new White House youth initiative to get all 4th graders and their families to experience the places that are home to our country’s natural treasures, rich history, and vibrant culture FREE OF CHARGE! The Every Kid in a Park pass is good for the 2015-2016 school year, until August 31, 2016. Information on obtaining the pass is available by visiting www.everykidinapark.gov.
